Guides raise funds for Daffodil Day
Local Girl Guides have joined in the annual Daffodil Day fundraising campaign. The Guides took on the challenge of organising a High Tea. They spent time baking slices, preparing club sandwiches, cooking cakes, making scones and whipping cream. They made the invitations, served a room full of guests and ran the raffle.
Guest speaker, Rob Petrie, is a volunteer for local cancer groups (and former employee of the Cancer Council). He congratulated the Guides on their efforts and on the lovely manners displayed. Rob explained to the guests how Daffodil Day is the flagship of cancer fundraising, and in currently in its 30th year. He spoke about the telephone support service and encouraged anybody effected to ring for support.
The 2016 focus for Daffodil Day is the fact that most people know someone affected by cancer. The Cancer Council say that about 350 Australians are diagnosed with cancer every day. The good news is that:
- cancer research is resulting in better treatments
- cancer prevention campaigns are working
- support for those affected by cancer is improving
Funds raised during Daffodil Day will contribute to:
- providing support and information resources to patients
- supporting health professionals to advise patients on cancer prevention, screening and diagnosis
- ensuring cancer nurses are available to offer support on the free telephone service (131120)
- supporting childcare centres and primary schools taking part in the National SunSmart Schools Program
- providing telephone and web-based support groups.
