National Chocolate Chip Day

May 15, 2025
Today is National Chocolate Chip Day.
While National Chocolate Chip Day is officially recognised in the United States on 15 May, we’re more than happy to join in some of the quirkier international celebrations — especially when they involve chocolate.
Our Girl Guides never need much of an excuse to cook (and taste-test), so the Delacombe and Sebastopol Girl Guides acknowledged the occasion by baking batches of delicious chocolate chip biscuits. The girls practised their cooking skills, measuring, sharing and teamwork.
Other chocolate chip–themed activities on the night included a choc-chip number game, a Cookie Monster running game, and making their own handmade chocolate chip craft items.
Did you know?
- Chocolate chips were first created in the 1930s, when Ruth Wakefield, owner of the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts, added chopped pieces of a Nestlé chocolate bar to her biscuit dough. Rather than melting, the chunks held their shape — and the chocolate chip biscuit was born.
- In 1939, Nestlé struck a deal with Ruth Wakefield to print her recipe on their packaging. In return, she received a lifetime supply of chocolate!
- Nestlé went on to manufacture ready-made chocolate chips — and the original Toll House Cookie recipe still appears on their packaging in the U.S.
- Chocolate chips now come in a variety of flavours: milk, dark, white and caramel.
- Chocolate chip biscuits are among the most popular homemade treats around the globe.
