Book Badge Decoding
May 24, 2024
After visiting the Sebastopol Library the previous week and completing several homework tasks to earn the Create-a-Challenge book badge, the Delacombe Junior Girl Guides arrived at their next meeting full of excitement, expecting to receive their badges. Instead, they were surprised to discover that the badges were locked in a small purple suitcase, and all the Leaders had forgotten the combination to the attached padlocks.
The girls had a great time immersing themselves in the presented story for the wide-game as they learned about:
- books created in braille
- fiction and non-fiction books
- the Dewey Decimal Classification System
- hieroglyphics in ancient writing
Each topic presented a different challenge to decipher a mystery word using either pig-pen cipher, braille, or hieroglyphic code. The answers were then used to find mystery letters, reveal a mystery word, and eventually decode the ‘unlock code’. It wasn’t until all four patrols had identified the correct code for the padlocks that the suitcase could be unlocked to retrieve the badges.
The Guides worked well together and were thrilled that once opened, the little purple suitcase did indeed contain their badges.
