Outdoor Cooking @ Lingbogol

June 30, 2025
Last Saturday turned out to be one of June’s rare breaks from chilly, stay-at-home weather — and our Girl Guides made the most of it by taking part in an ‘Outdoor Cooking Day’ organised by Louisa and her team of Leaders.
The event was designed to give the Guides an opportunity to experiment with a range of outdoor cooking techniques, including open fires, portable gas stoves, and cardboard box ovens.
The day kicked off with morning tea of camp doughnuts filled with either jam or Nutella. After gathering firewood and lighting tee-pee fires, it was time to cook lunch using either jaffle irons or hot coals. The extensive menu offered was either:
* Ham toasted sandwich
* Cheese toasted sandwich
* Ham and cheese toasted sandwich
* Cheese and ham toasted sandwich (of course there’s a notable difference)
Next, the cardboard box ovens were set up to cook ‘cheesy nachos’, followed by ‘fruit kebabs’ made with apple, banana, pineapple, and chocolate — grilled over hot coals.
For dessert, the girls enjoyed ‘berry s’mores’, cooked either in foil in the ovens or straight over the fire. Topped with a squirt of whipped cream, they were a gooey, chocolatey hit.
The day wrapped up with classic s’mores, with marshmallows toasted on forks over the fire — the perfect end to a fun-filled (and very tasty) adventure.
With the weather holding out beautifully, it was a memorable day of teamwork, outdoor skills, and delicious treats for all.
