S’mores

One of our favourite cooking activities is toasting marshmallows on an outdoor fire,  or over tea-light candles in the kitchen, for the purpose of making delicious s’mores.  There are Girl Guide reports that document making ‘some mores’ (original name) as early as 1925.  In 1927, the recipe was officially included in an American Girl Guide handbook titled ‘Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts’.  The recipe is attributed to Loretta Scott Crew, who made the treat by the campfire with her Girl Guides.

A recipe book published by marshmallow producer ‘Campfire Marshmallows’, included a recipe called a ‘Graham Cracker Sandwich’, and acknowledged that it was already enjoyed by Girl Guides and Scouts.

The traditional s’more consists of a toasted marshmallow with a piece of chocolate sandwiched between two biscuits. Over time, various creative variations have emerged, using different ingredients and cooking methods.

While National S’mores Day is primarily celebrated in the United States, we certainly aren’t going to pass up an opportunity to enjoy s’mores.

The Delacombe and Sebastopol Guides have enjoyed a s’mores themed evening that included:

  • making felt s’more badges
  • creating various campfire craft items
  • toasting marshmallows and making s’mores
  • and finishing the evening with a campfire.
